Korean Meal at Kimchi Land

I have been to Seoul numerous times for holiday and work and always enjoy my meals there especially kimchi or anything cook with kimchi. I simply like kimchi. 🙂

I stopped over in Seoul for a couple of days after my trip to Vegas, bought skincare and cosmetics, and enjoyed eating Korean cuisines and some simple meals. Sharing the photos of some of my meals at Kimchi Land.

My first breakfast in Seoul was just across the road from the hotel I was staying. The sandwich was refreshing with watermelon and honeydew. The cappuccino was great.

After late breakfast, we had fried chicken for an afternoon snack at Insadong. The fried chicken tasted average. We finished them anyway as we were hungry.02 Korean Fried Chicken IMG_4211

After bumming around at Myeongdong, bought what I planned to buy, we had Korean BBQ and kimchi stew for dinner. The meat was average. The kimchi stew was good.03 Korean BBQ IMG_4229

If you are a Korean drama fan, you would know that jjajangmyeon is a type of local fastfood that Koreans eat regularly. Therefore, it is a must try when one is in Korea. We walked to an eatery nearby the hotel we stayed and had jjajangmyeon for breakfast. It was tasty.

Jjajangmyeon is a Korean-Chinese noodle dish covered with black soybean sauce. It was first introduced to Korea at a restaurant called Gonghwachun (공화춘) in Chinatown of Incheon, Korea back in 1905. It was introduced by Chinese merchants. The flavour has evolved to suit Korean’s taste buds, for instance adding sweet caramels to the sauce. For more on the history of Jajangmeon, check out the Jajangmeon Museum at Incheon.

Another must eat food, when you are in Korea, is Samgyetang (삼계탕, 蔘鷄湯) means ginseng chicken soup which consists primarily of a whole young chicken filled with garlic, rice, jujube, and ginseng.

Samgyetang is a warm soup for hot summer days and especially popular meal on sambok (삼복) days, which are three distinct days of the lunar calendar, commonly among the hottest and most sultry summer days in Korea. In Chinese culture, similar to Korean culture, this soup is believed to promote good health.07 Ginseng Chicken IMG_4268

Time for another of my favourite comfort food, Bibimbap (비빔밥). Bibimpap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with sautéed and seasoned vegetables,  chilli pepper paste and soy sauce. A raw or fried egg and sliced meat are common additions. The hot dish is stirred together thoroughly just before eating.

I learnt that this dish was traditionally eaten on the eve of the lunar new year as the people at that time felt that they had to get rid of all of the leftover side dishes before the new year. The solution to this problem was to put all of the leftovers in a bowl of rice and to mix them together.

I guess that’s what Koreans do with leftover dishes. As for me, I will make a dish of fried rice, throw in eggs and other leftover food that I can find in the fridge. Fried rice is another of my favourite comfort food.

I wanted very much to try some “authentic” local food and I made my colleague, a Korean, to bring me out for dinner. She brought me to a Korean Table d’hote restaurant at Insadong. We had yangban-jeongsik which is a set menu with bulgogi, stir-fried glass noodles, and vegetables, salad, three-coloured vegetable pancakes, spicy stir-fried pork, boiled sliced pork, grilled fish, steamed egg, etc. The whole table was filled with small plates of food. The food was good but was too much resulted in quite a bit of food left.

Just before flying out of South Korea, I had my last Korean meal at Incheon Airport. Korean hot noodle soup with yummy kimchi side dishes.
