As I was walking along the Marina Bay area, this aluminium and steel sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn caught my attention. It is standing at Marina Barrage, Singapore. You probably could see my reflection on the globe, taking this picture using my phone.

Do you believe what goes around comes around? Or what Buddhists and Hindus believe in the karma? The law of cause and effect.

People have a tendency to constantly search for meaning to life and logic to things happening in our life. How about you?

This reminds me of what my former manager, Chris, said to me when he took over the team and became my manager.

Flash back eight years, I kept asking why I was stuck in such a situation when all I wanted was to do a good job, deliver results and make an impact. I was in a situation when I was damn if I do a good job and damn if I don’t. It was one of the most frustrating periods in my career. Chris told me to focus on doing what’s right and ignore the noise.

I had a happy ending to that chapter. The person who created the issues left the company. Chris recognised my performance, fought for my promotion and I was promoted shortly after. Perhaps what goes around, does come around.

For me, I prefer to keep it simple and not over analyse things. I go by this golden rule –

Do to others what you would want them to do to you.

Like what my former manager said –

Focus on doing what is right.

 

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 7.12
