Central Vietnam, Hue (Former Capital of Vietnam)
If you are in Da Nang or planning to visit Da Nang and has a day or two to spare, I would recommend to visit Hue, the former capital of Vietnam. Hue is around three hours drive by car from Da Nang. Sharing with you my experience in Hue, how to get there, where to stay, restaurant to go and where I visited and did.
My First Visit to Hue
I have traveled to Vietnam for work many times and been to Hue twice. My first visit to Hue was a touch and go. I was at Da Nang for an event, followed by another event at Hue. I went to Hue by car via the Hải Vân Tunnel which took around three hours. Right after the event, I was being driven back to Da Nang that I may catch my flight back to Singapore. That was my first experience in Hue.

My Second Visit to Hue
My second visit to Hue, a month after my first visit, was with two other colleagues and we managed to explore Hue a bit. We met our local colleagues at Ho Chi Minh City (formerly named Saigon), then we took an evening domestic flight via Vietnam Airlines to Hue. We landed at Phu Bai Airport, took a taxi to The Imperial Hotel. We were welcomed by an atmosphere of royalty and luxury of traditional style when we stepped into the hotel lobby.
After checking in, we had an early night as our workshop with the customer was at 7.30 am the next morning which means we need to be there no later than 7.15 am.

Lunch at traditional Hue restaurant
The workshop with the customer went well. After the workshop, the customer brought us to Khong Gian Xua Restaurant, a popular restaurant in Hue with an ancient ambiance setting. The presentation of the Hue cuisine is refined, served in small serving size in small bowls different to other parts of Vietnam that typically serve the food in big bowls.
After lunch, the hospitable customer offered us a car with a driver to bring us to visit The Imperial City. We gratefully accepted as we were advice by our local colleagues that we would appear rude if we reject.
Will share on our visit to The Imperial City and the River Cruise on Perfume River in my next post. Stay tune!

Indeed Hue was imperial capital at a time when the political center moved south from Hanoi. We (Mel) just love the history of it all!
