Evening at Hoi An

Central Vietnam, Quang Nam Province, Hoi An

If you are at Da Nang for business and have an evening to spare, I would recommend to spend the evening at Hoi An.  It is about 30 mins drive from Da Nang.

I was in Da Nang to facilitate a workshop together with my colleagues.  The workshop went well and ended by late afternoon.  One of my colleagues, who has been to Da Nang multiple times, suggested we spend the evening at Hoi An. We went back to the hotel and changed into comfortable casual attire and took the private car arranged by my colleague to Hoi An.

About Hoi An

Hoi An translates as “Peaceful Meeting Place”, formerly known as Fai-Fo or Faifoo, is a beautiful city with a population of approximately 120,000 in Quảng Nam Province, south of Da Nang. In 1999, the old town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as a well-preserved example of a south-east Asian trading port of the 15th to 19th centuries, the principal port of the Cham Kingdom.

When we arrived at Hoi An, the sun has set, hiding behind the cloud and the old Chinese-styled shop houses, a glint of orange light was illuminating the blue sky.

We walked around the charming old town, the old shop houses are retailing clothing, souvenirs, traditional Vietnamese lanterns, etc. There are also art galleries, museums and tailor shops.  The old shop houses are very well preserved, exuding the culture, character and charm of the old town.

Lanterns

Along the river, there are restaurants and bars.  It is particularly atmospheric in the evening with the lanterns lighting up the streets.

Looking from across the river, we could see the lanterns lighting up the river bank and the bridge.  Reflections of the lighted lanterns shining on the surface of the river.

Before we call it a day, we saw lights shining from a corner. A group of young ladies lighting candles on their water lanterns that were shaped like flowers to be released on the river. They each said their prayers before releasing the lanterns. It was a beautiful and peaceful sight. A beautiful way to end our visit there.

We had a wonderful evening at Hoi An and glad that our colleague brought us there.  Do make time to visit this beautifully preserved old town when you are in Da Nang.  I am sure you will be captivated by its character and charm.

After my first visit to Da Nang and Hoi An, I went back for vacation. Will share more in another post. Stay tune!

  1. I travelled through through Vietnam during the summer, Hoi An was one of my favourite places! I took so many pictures but couldn’t quite capture how amazing the lanterns looked as they reflected off the river. Great place.
